The Spice King

Image
The Spice King Elizabeth Camden Bethany House Gray Delacroix has dedicated his life to building a successful global spice empire, but it has come at a cost. Tasked with gaining access to the private Delacroix plant collection, Smithsonian botanist Annabelle Larkin unwittingly steps into a web of dangerous political intrigue and will be forced to choose between her heart and her loyalty to her country.      After being a bit underwhelmed with this author's last series, I was pleased to find myself thoroughly enjoying The Spice King . Elizabeth Camden has a way of expertly handling history in her novels, spotlighting events of the past we've often forgotten about or overlook. This one focused on the intersection of politics, science, and business at the turn of the century, specifically on the purity of canned and processed food produced throughout the country. The politics of the Spanish-American War the the country's relationship with Cuba also play a role i...

A Dangerous Legacy

A Dangerous Legacy Elizabeth Camden Bethany House Publishers Lucy is determined to keep working as a telegraph operator at a news agency, even though the arrival of Sir Colin Beckwith threatens her position. When she discovers Colin's shocking secret, she agrees to assist him if he helps her find her family's stolen inheritance--not realizing that the trail leads into a web of treachery, danger, and conspiracy.      This book had a lot of what I love about Elizabeth Camden's novels. Her historical settings are always absolutely fabulous, because she actually delves into what was going on politically and culturally in ways that relates to the characters. This book tackled telegraph system, mental asylums, the Panama Canal, early 20th century plumbing... I mean, it was great. And I did really like the mystery. As far as plot goes, it was an A.      However, I didn't always feel that way about the characters. I liked them at first, but as time ...

From This Moment

Image
From This Moment Elizabeth Camden Bethany House Romulus White has tried for years to hire illustrator Stella West for his renowned scientific magazine. She is the missing piece he needs to propel his magazine to the forefront of the industry. But Stella abruptly quit the art world and moved to Boston with a single purpose: to solve the mysterious death of her beloved sister. Romulus, a man with connections to high society and every important power circle in the city, could be her most valuable ally.  Sparks fly the instant Stella and Romulus join forces, and Romulus soon realizes the strong-willed and charismatic Stella could disrupt his hard-won independence. Can they continue to help each other when their efforts draw the wrong kind of attention from the powers-that-be and put all they've worked for at risk?      I love how distinct and unusual Elizabeth Camden can make her characters and their situations; it's always a highlight of her books for me....

The Rose of Winslow Street

Image
The Rose of Winslow Street Elizabeth Camden Bethany House Publishers Returning from their summer home, the last thing that 19th-century New Englanders Libby and her father expect to find is a Romanian family inhabiting the house they've lived in for 20 years. But that's exactly what happens---sparking a fierce legal battle as both clans insist the house is rightfully theirs. Can they find common ground? I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got this book. The first book by Elizabeth Camden that I read was The Lady of Bolton Hill , and though it had some parts I really liked, it wasn’t one of my favorites. On the other hand, I loved Against the Tide . So I wasn’t sure where The Rose of Winslow Street would be on that spectrum. Would I love it, would I find it just okay, or would I find it somewhere in between? I’m going to admit that at first I didn’t think I was going to like it. It was really hard to like Michael right after he had just barged into someone e...
