Since Siri Mitchell has given us several highly enjoyable historical novels, I had high expectations for this book. Sadly, it might be one of my least favorites by her- I'm struggling with the rating here, actually.

While the writing was certainly more than fair, the heroine, Charlotte, drove me crazy. While I understand (sort of) what the author was doing in her ignorance of "Society," Charlotte's extreme ineptitude of any social skills at all made me annoyed with her for the same reasons I never could read the Amelia Bedelia books as a child- I just got frustrated.

That's not to say that there weren't things that I enjoyed about it; the ending, for instance, got significantly better. And I found Miss Templeton interesting, because at first I thought she was going to be a "false friend" and Charlotte was going to find out that she was making fun of her. However, I was pleased that that didn't happen, and in all honesty I found her to be one of the more interesting characters.

Anyway, this book was a miss for me- but I've noticed that my enjoyment of Siri Mitchell's releases tend to alternate (I loved her last book but didn't care for her novel before that; meanwhile her fourth novel past was one of my favorites). I hope her next one is much better, but I admit I didn't care for this one.

    Aw, really? Shoot, I was looking forward to this one, but now I'm slightly dissuaded. Haha. ;-P I read The Messenger and LOVED it and then Love Comes Calling and LOVED that one too, so now I'm interested in Siri Mitchell's new releases. But from the sound of this, I probably won't bother. Thanks for the review!

    Yes, The Messenger and Love Comes Calling are my favorites by her- I loved them! But this one just wasn't a favorite. I mean, there are actually several really good reviews on this book on goodreads, so maybe it was just me...but yeah. Like a Flower in Bloom was not a favorite, Which is a pity because the cover is really lovely :(

The Words We Lost Nicole Deese Bethany House Publishers I truly had no idea how much I would enjoy this book when I picked it up. My relationship with contemporary fiction is rocky, but I'm so glad I took a chance on this one. Upon reflection, I think what really makes or breaks a contemporary book for me is the voice and writing style- and Nicole Deese passed that test with flying colors. Speaking of my past with contemporary fiction, grief seems a common denominator in the last several that I have read, and I think this one landed the best and most true for me, without being overwhelming in its depiction. After reading this, I'm not only looking forward to the next book in this series, but exploring this author's previous works as well. (and a heads up that though there is a lovely romance in this book, I wouldn't say that it is as heavily featured/relied on as the series title might suggest).
